The work originates directly from the memorial collection of Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov and represents an original authorial prototype executed in 1970 - during the artist’s mature creative period, when his celebrated “flying” manner achieved its greatest expressive and compositional freedom. The miniature was carefully preserved in the artist’s personal archive as a reference example of dynamic composition and has never before appeared on the public market. A museum-level example of expressive Palekh painting, embodying one of the most dramatic and cinematic themes in Russian art - a racing troika pursued by wolves through a winter forest. Despite its intimate scale, the composition possesses extraordinary internal energy. Golikov transforms the small surface into a vortex of movement in which every element is subordinated to the rhythm of speed and pursuit. The work is especially striking for its unusual color palette. Rather than employing the traditional black background, the artist uses a luminous coral-red ground against which icy blue hills, snow-covered pines, and flashes of gold create the sensation of frozen light and a dramatic winter sunset. At the center of the composition, the rushing troika of a black, deep chestnut and piebald horses. It is rendered in Golikov’s unmistakable manner, with flaming manes, elongated silhouettes, and a near-musical rhythm of movement. The scene gains further dramatic intensity through the silhouettes of wolves woven into the same sweeping motion, heightening the feeling of danger and unstoppable speed.
