Provenance A poetic relic of Golikov’s late mature period with impeccable provenance from the Golikov family archive. The work originates directly from the memorial collection of Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov and was created in 1982, when the artist’s style had achieved a rare balance between decorative brilliance and emotional subtlety. The miniature was carefully preserved within the artist’s family as a reference example of the lyrical direction in his oeuvre. Conceived as a complete composition for a circular powder-box lid, it has never previously appeared on the open market. A museum-quality example of Palekh lyrical miniature painting, revealing Golikov as a master of psychological nuance and ornamental rhythm. In “The Rendezvous” (“The Couple”), the artist turns to one of the most poetic themes of Palekh art - lovers existing within an idealised fairy-tale world. The composition is flawlessly inscribed within the circular format. The elegantly dressed couple, rendered in emerald and coral tones, is enclosed within an ornamental wreath of fantastic Palekh flowers and foliage. The delicate movement of the hands, the slight inclination of the young woman’s head, and the closeness of the silhouettes create an atmosphere of silent dialogue filled with warmth and harmony. The decorative treatment of the floral motifs is especially remarkable for its large scarlet blossoms, rich emerald leaves,   gold-highlighted stems and scrolls. The ornament encloses the figures within a self-contained poetic universe. The jewel-like application of powdered gold is particularly evident in the folds of the garments, the floral ornamentation, the delicate highlights and contouring. The deep black background and mirror lacquer create the effect of a precious enamel object in which every line radiates luminosity and musical refinement.
