Provenance An exceptionally rare publishing original of museum importance from the memorial archive of Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov. The work originates directly from the Golikov family collection and represents an authentic artist’s design created for Soviet artistic postcard printing in 1970. Its historical and documentary importance is enhanced by the survival of publisher’s stamps, editorial annotations, technical production markings, a fragment of Pushkin’s poem on the reverse. Works of this type rarely survived, as they functioned as working originals within Soviet publishing production. A unique monument of Palekh graphic art and Soviet publishing culture. Created after Pushkin’s “Ruslan and Lyudmila, ” the composition reveals Golikov as a master of narrative miniature painting. At the center stands a heroic rider on a white horse approaching a magical shoreline. To the right appears an oriental vessel carrying a mysterious figure emerging from swirling blue waves. On the left, the dramatic motif of a reclining sleeping figure intensifies the atmosphere of poetic mystery. The work functions as a complete miniature composition of museum quality. The reverse side, preserving original publishing annotations and a fragment of Pushkin’s text, transforms the object into a rare documentary artifact of Soviet artistic culture and an important testimony to the relationship between Palekh art and Soviet graphic publishing.
