Provenance An exceptionally rare publishing original of museum importance from the memorial archive of Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov. The work originates directly from the Golikov family collection and represents an authentic artist’s design prepared for Soviet artistic postcard printing in 1970. Its historical and documentary significance is enhanced by the survival of publisher’s stamps, editorial annotations, technical layout markings, a fragment of Pushkin’s poem on the reverse. Such working originals rarely survived, as they were used directly within the Soviet publishing process. A unique monument of Palekh graphic art and Soviet publishing culture. Created after Pushkin’s “Ruslan and Lyudmila, ” the composition belongs among the most dramatic and expressive fairy-tale interpretations by the artist. Within a compact format, Golikov constructs a scene of heroic confrontation filled with tension, movement, and theatrical intensity. At the center appears a mounted rider on a pale horse surging upward toward an adversary. In the upper register, a defeated warrior tumbles through a vortex of blazing coral-red sky and swirling clouds. Below, a fantastic beast intensifies the mythological atmosphere of the composition and reinforces its epic character. The reverse side, preserving editorial stamps and fragments of Pushkin’s text, transforms the work into both an artistic object and a rare documentary artifact of Soviet graphic publishing culture.
