Provenance An exceptionally rare publishing original of museum importance from the memorial archive of Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov. The work originates directly from the Golikov family collection and represents an authentic artist’s design created for Soviet art postcard production in 1970. Its documentary and historical significance is reinforced by the survival of publisher’s stamps, editorial annotations, original layout markings, a printed fragment from Pushkin’s Ruslan and Lyudmila on the reverse. Such working publishing originals rarely survived, as they were typically used directly in the production process. A remarkable monument of Palekh graphic art and Soviet publishing culture. Created after Pushkin’s Ruslan and Lyudmila, the composition belongs among the most monumental and dramatic graphic interpretations by the artist. Despite its intimate format, Golikov constructs a highly complex multi-figure composition filled with movement, heroic tension, and decorative brilliance. On the left, a mounted rider on a white horse appears within a radiant blue aura, bursting through the pictorial space and becoming the central axis of the composition. Below unfolds a fierce battle scene in which warriors and horses intertwine in a sweeping vortex characteristic of Golikov’s mature dynamic style. To the right rises a fantastic palace-like structure containing a secondary narrative scene of the sleeping or imprisoned heroine. The reverse side, preserving editorial stamps and fragments of Pushkin’s text, transforms the work into both an artistic object and a rare historical document of Soviet graphic publishing culture.
