Well-preserved lacquer surface and painted decoration. Provenance: An authentic late-period lacquer box by Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov from the Golikov family archive. Created in 1989, the work belongs to the mature phase of the artist’s career, when his celebrated “flying” manner achieved exceptional decorative freedom and expressive power. The box remained carefully preserved within the family collection as a characteristic example of Golikov’s fairy-tale imagery. The Firebird theme occupies a central place within twentieth-century Palekh art and remains among the most sought-after subjects by collectors. At the right side of the composition stands a heroic figure in a flowing crimson cloak advancing toward a white towered palace. The entire scene appears illuminated by the fiery presence of the Firebird, concealed within a radiant solar medallion among decorative branches. Particularly remarkable is the artist’s virtuoso linear rhythm. Every detail - from the delicate stems of plants to the flowing cloak and stylized silhouette of the Firebird - participates in a single musical movement across the composition. The refined use of gold highlights creates an effect of inner luminosity, while the deep lacquer surface enhances the jewel-like quality of the object. The box stands as an autonomous museum-level work of art rather than merely a decorative object.
