Provenance An authentic work by Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov created in 1970, during one of the artist’s most mature and expressive creative periods. The work belongs to Golikov’s rare cycle devoted to heroic and historical twentieth-century subjects. Unlike his widely celebrated fairy-tale and epic compositions, works dedicated to wartime memory and national heroism are encountered far less frequently and possess particular historical and artistic importance. A powerful multi-figure composition in which the artist merges the epic language of Palekh miniature painting with the poetic atmosphere of heroic narrative. Across the elongated lid unfolds a procession of partisans departing for campaign through a fantastically transformed landscape. The composition functions as a continuous decorative frieze, with figures advancing rhythmically from left to right, creating the impression of solemn movement. At the center appears a rider on a white horse, distinguished by his luminous silhouette and flowing banner. Around him march armed partisans, interpreted not as everyday figures but as legendary folk heroes. At the far right stands a woman holding a child - an emotional symbol of farewell and memory. Characteristic Palekh hills, fantastical trees, and swirling clouds transform the historical narrative into a heroic legend. Despite its relatively modest scale, the composition possesses remarkable monumentality and inner dynamism. The artist’s signature “N. Golikov. 1970” together with the inscription “Palekh” confirms the work’s status as a fully autograph lacquer miniature.
