Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov (1924–2011) - Box “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” (“The Lament of Yaroslavna”). Palekh, USSR, 1991. Papier-mâché, egg tempera, gold highlights, lacquer. 30 by 15 cm. Condition report: Traces of use. Minor wear and light surface changes to the lacquer consistent with age. The painted decoration remains well preserved. Provenance: The work originates directly from the memorial collection of Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov. An authentic autograph work by Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov created in 1991, during the artist’s late mature period marked by exceptional philosophical depth and decorative freedom. The work belongs to one of the most important directions within Golikov’s oeuvre — compositions inspired by Old Russian literature and national epic poetry. Subjects derived from The Tale of Igor’s Campaign occupy a distinguished place within the Palekh tradition and are regarded among the most intellectually refined themes in Russian lacquer miniature art. A monumentally conceived composition structured as a layered poetic narrative in which ancient Russian epic literature merges with the symbolic language of Palekh painting. At the center rises the tragic figure of Yaroslavna, lifting her arms toward the heavens in lamentation and prayer. Above her appears a crimson sun with a human face — one of the key symbolic images of Old Russian culture and the emotional focal point of the entire composition. To the left sits the grieving Prince Igor amid stylized hills and fantastical landscape forms. Along the lower register unfolds a panoramic vision of an ancient Russian city with white churches, towers, and fortified walls. This lacquer box stands among the most profound literary and epic works of Golikov’s late period.  In this composition the artist unites traditions of Old Russian icon painting, the aesthetic language of Palekh miniature, philosophical symbolism and the poetic spirit of national epic literature. The subject of Yaroslavna’s lament has traditionally been considered one of the most intellectually demanding themes in Palekh art, requiring not only compositional mastery but also the ability to convey the emotional atmosphere of the medieval text.
