Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov (1924–2011) - Box Lid “At the Well”. Palekh, USSR, 1990 Papier-mâché, egg tempera, gold highlights, lacquer. 15 by 10 cm. Condition report: Well preserved. Minor traces of use and light surface wear to the lacquer consistent with age. Provenance: From the Golikov family collection (Palekh). Created and preserved within the artist’s personal archive. A refined lyrical composition executed in the decorative manner characteristic of Nikolai Golikov’s late period. The foreground depicts a young man and woman standing beside a well - a traditional motif drawn from Russian folk poetry and fairy-tale imagery. Between them stands a vivid red horse that forms both the visual and emotional center of the composition. In the distance rises a white church surrounded by a fantastical Palekh landscape of stylized trees, hills, and ornamental vegetation. Golikov employs the stylized spatial language characteristic of Palekh painting, transforming the scene into a poetic vision rather than a literal everyday episode. The work reflects Golikov’s mature artistic style of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when his compositions became increasingly decorative, refined, and intimate in mood. The composition continues the Palekh tradition of works inspired not by a single literary source but by the poetic atmosphere of Russian fairy tales and folk songs.
