Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov (1924–2011) - Design for a printed postcard “Battle Between the Reds and the Whites”. Palekh, USSR, 1967. Cardboard, tempera, hand-painted original artwork. 26 by 18 cm. Condition report: Minor traces of age and storage. Slight wear and light surface marks to the margins. The painted composition remains in very good condition. Provenance A rare original design created by Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov in 1967 for reproduction as an artistic postcard. The work survives as an authentic publishing maquette from the artist’s studio practice and represents an exceptionally rare category of material connected with the Soviet publishing process. Such originals were seldom preserved, as most remained in editorial archives or disappeared after printing production. A vivid and highly dynamic composition devoted to the Russian Civil War, interpreted through the decorative and epic visual language of the Palekh school. Against a backdrop of soaring golden hills unfolds a whirlwind battle scene between Red and White forces. The entire surface is charged with movement: horsemen collide in violent momentum, figures twist through the air, and swords and banners create a complex rhythmic pattern. Golikov approaches the historical subject not as documentary illustration, but as heroic legend. The riders acquire an almost mythic character, while the battle itself becomes a grand decorative symphony of color and motion. This work belongs to a rare aspect of Golikov’s oeuvre connected with Soviet heroic-revolutionary themes of the 1960s. During this period, Palekh artists sought to unite ancient Russian icon-painting traditions, the refined language of Palekh miniature, contemporary historical subjects, monumental compositional movement. The composition strongly reflects Golikov’s celebrated “flying” manner,   his distinctive ability to convey turbulent movement and emotional intensity through rhythmic line and color. Collecting & Investment Potential: Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov is recognized as one of the major Palekh masters of the twentieth century, whose works are preserved in the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the State Museum of Palekh Art.
