Volga - The Russian River belongs to the late creative period of Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov and represents a refined interpretation of the Palekh artistic tradition at the end of the twentieth century. The composition is conceived as a symbolic visual narrative structured around the image of the great river. The vertical flow of the Volga forms the central compositional axis, around which unfold scenes of daily life, architectural motifs of ancient towns, folkloric episodes, and lyrical narrative details. At the upper part of the composition appears the image of the Mother of God, giving the work a spiritual and almost icon-like character. Beneath this sacred image, miniature scenes develop in a manner reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts and Palekh lacquer miniatures.
