Outer frame size: 50.6 x 59.7 cm. All measured values are approximate. Signature: Vincent van Gogh Description: A vibrant landscape composition depicting a sunlit grove of olive trees extending toward a range of blue mountains beneath an intensely luminous sky. The foreground is constructed through energetic passages of ochre, orange, yellow, brown, blue, and green, with winding bands of color suggesting uneven earth, paths, and cultivated terrain. Groups of olive trees occupy both sides of the composition, their twisting dark trunks and rounded crowns articulated through rhythmic strokes of green, blue-green, yellow, brown, and black that give the vegetation a pronounced sense of movement. The opening between the trees draws the eye toward the center of the landscape, where cool blue and violet mountains rise in the distance and provide a strong chromatic counterpoint to the warm orange and golden tones of the foreground. Above, a brilliant yellow sun is surrounded by concentric, swirling strokes of cream, gold, pale yellow, and touches of blue, transforming the sky into an active field of radiating light. The expressive contours, strongly contrasting complementary colors, heavily rhythmic brushwork, and animated treatment of natural forms reflect visual characteristics closely associated with Vincent van Gogh's landscapes from his period in Provence, particularly his sustained exploration of olive groves, mountains, intense sunlight, and the expressive possibilities of the southern French landscape. The lower left is signed ”Vincent.” The work is presented in a substantial decorative frame with cream, gilt, and textured ornamental elements.
