Outer frame size: 75.8 x 88.2 cm. All measured values are approximate. Signature: Claude Monet Description: A dramatic coastal composition dominated by a monumental natural rock arch rising directly from the sea, its massive formation occupying much of the center and left side of the canvas. The cliff face is constructed through densely layered passages of ochre, rose, orange, violet, brown, blue, and cream, with broken touches of color suggesting the irregular geological surface and the changing effects of sunlight across the stone. At left, the opening of the arch reveals a pale atmospheric sky and a narrow stretch of distant horizon, while the enormous rock formation descends into the water near the center of the composition, emphasizing the imposing scale of the coastal landscape. The sea fills the lower portion of the canvas and is rendered through energetic strokes of turquoise, deep blue, green, violet, white, and gray, creating a vivid impression of moving water and reflected light around the base of the cliff. A small sailing vessel appears in the distance at left, providing a subtle indication of scale and reinforcing the monumental character of the natural formation. Above the horizon, the expansive sky is treated in delicate passages of pale blue, cream, white, and soft pink, its luminous atmosphere contrasting with the substantial physical presence of the cliff. The broken brushwork, chromatic modeling of rock and water, and emphasis on changing coastal light reflect visual characteristics closely associated with Claude Monet's Impressionist exploration of the Normandy coast, particularly his celebrated fascination with the dramatic cliffs and natural arches of Étretat. The lower left is signed ”Claude Monet.” The work is presented in a broad cream-colored decorative frame with carved foliate detailing.
