ALFRED SISLEY (1839-1899), THE CHURCH AT MORET, 1894, OIL ON CANVAS - ALFRED SISLEY (1839-1899), THE CHURCH AT MORET, 1894, OIL ON CANVAS Dimensions: Image size: 45.1 x 37.2 cm. All measured values are approximate. Outer frame size: 67 x 59.6 cm. All measured values are approximate. Signature: Alfred Sisley Description: An atmospheric architectural view dominated by the monumental facade of a church rising beneath a clear blue sky. The pale stone structure is modeled through broken passages of cream, ivory, lavender, rose, and soft blue, allowing changing sunlight and shadow to animate the architectural surface. The composition favors luminous color and varied brushwork over sharply defined architectural detail, particularly across the tower, rooflines, projecting walls, and deeply recessed entrance. Small figures populate the street at lower left, while a modest pavilion-like structure in the foreground introduces scale and a sense of everyday activity around the imposing church. The restricted street view and upward perspective emphasize the height and mass of the building while preserving the light-filled atmosphere characteristic of Sisley's mature Impressionist work. The lower right bears the signature ”Sisley” together with the date ”94.” The reverse shows an aged canvas mounted on a wooden stretcher with paper labels attached. The work is presented in a substantial carved wooden frame with scrolling and geometric ornament.
