DAVID HOCKNEY (B. 1937), SUNFLOWERS, 1996, OIL ON CANVAS - DAVID HOCKNEY (B. 1937), SUNFLOWERS, 1996, OIL ON CANVAS Dimensions: Image size: 76.2 x 76.2 cm. All measured values are approximate. Signature: David Hockney Description: A vibrant still-life composition depicting three arrangements of sunflowers positioned across a brilliant red tabletop against a cool turquoise-blue background. The flowers are presented in three contrasting vessels, including a dark rounded vase at left, a tall green glass at center, and a vivid blue vase at right. Their yellow and orange petals radiate around deep red-brown centers, while long green stems rise and bend in varied directions, creating an animated rhythm across the upper half of the composition. A single fallen sunflower rests on the tabletop near the foreground, adding a subtle counterpoint to the upright bouquets. The intense contrast between the red table, blue-green background, and saturated yellow flowers gives the work a strong decorative presence, while the simplified forms and direct handling of color reflect Hockney's longstanding interest in still life, spatial clarity, and everyday subjects. Several framed objects are partially visible along the lower edge of the composition, introducing an additional interior element and suggesting the setting of a studio or domestic space. The reverse bears the handwritten title ”Sunflowers, ” together with the signature ”David Hockney” and the date ”1996.” Paper labels are attached to the stretcher.
