Fadhil Ukrufi alias Al Fadhil (Iraq, 1955) The Temple, 1980 from the Series “Sumero Warrior’s remains of memory”Oil con canvas100 X 80 cm
Al Fadhil is an artist of Iraqi origin, currently living in Italian-speaking Switzerland. The first stage of his artistic education was his graduation from the Institute of Arts in Baghdad in 1977, before moving to Italy in the 1980s to continue his studies at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence. His artistic production is characterised by the use of different media: painting, sculpture, photography and new media. “On the other hand, Fadhil Ukrufi (b. 1955), a sculptor and painter as well as a poet, appears to be fully integrated in the Italian panorama; all the restlessness of the ideologically aligned artist, Arab and in exile, transpires from his work”. (Encyclopaedia Treccani online, https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/iraq_res-ab09ded0-87ea-11dc-8e9d-0016357eee51_(Encyclopedia-Italiana)/; last accessed 20 September 2024 h. 11:47).This painting is part of a series of three (two of which are gathered in this catalogue) entitled “Sumero warrior's remains of memory.” The subject of this painting is a building ending in a semicircle reminiscent of a dome. The abstractionism shown in these artworks seems to allude to a kind of sublimation of feelings such as nostalgia and fondness for the splendours of Iraqi tradition, emotions manifested in his condition as an artist in diaspora. Signed and dated lower left, labels on the reverse, including a participation label from the Baghdad International Festival of Art, 1986.
