Pamphlet about the history of the ’Meshebat Naphesh’ society in London, from 1779–1879. London, 1879. 11 pp. 19 cm.
An offprint from The Jewish World, of November 28, telling the story of the Meshebat Naphesh society of the Ashkenazic community in London. It begins with the establishment of the society and its activities throughout the years, its directors and its yearly gala banquets.
The Meshebat Naphesh society was established in 1779 and was the oldest Ashkenazic charity in London. Its motto was “bread, meat and coals.” The pamphlet was published to mark 100 years since its establishment. It was a very important organization, founded by Levi Barent Cohen, whose daughter Hannah was married to Nathan Meir Rothschild. Another daughter Judith was married to Sir Moses Montefiore. The organization held a fundraising dinner each year that was a major affair in London’s high society.
A very rare pamphlet.
