Series : Archives de l'Institut de paleontologie humaine memoire - 24 .  Title's translation : ” The Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods of the Judean Desert ”. Rene Neuville - 1899-1952. Was a French diplomat, who served as French consul in Jerusalem, and one of the pioneers of prehistoric research in the Land of Israel. In 1927 he was posted to Jerusalem as French Vice-Consul, and for the next eleven years he devoted himself to the study of the prehistory of Israel. René Neville was active in the Palestine Oriental Society, serving as a member of its board and in 1931 as its president. He was also a member of the Archaeological Advisory Council of the Mandatory Department of Antiquities. After WWII he was appointed Consul General of France in Israel and Transjordan and served in this position until his death. During the years in Israel - 1928–1937, 1946–1949, Rene Neville conducted excavations at prehistoric sites in the Judean Desert on behalf of the ”Institut de paléontologie humaine” which in Paris, in caves of Umm Qatafa, Abu Zif, Tahbah, a-Taban, Umm Nqus, Ain Sakhri, Umm a-Zuwaitina and Umm Qala'a, in the rock shelters of Irq al-Ahmar and al-Qutsir, as well as in the terraces of al-Khiyam and Abu Zif. In 1929–1934 he participated in Alexis Malone's excavations in the Ghassoul mounds on behalf of the Pontifical Biblical Institute, and in the years 1934–1935 he excavated alongside Moshe Shteklis in the cave of Qedumim (Kafza) at the foot of Mount Qafza. Before his death in 1952 he managed to excavate again at Umm Qatafa and obtain two collections from the excavations conducted by his Bedouin assistants at other sites, which were published by Jean Perrot.
