Two multi-gem and diamond insect brooches - Two multi-gem and diamond insect brooches Larger brooch a late XIXe century multigem-set bee brooch, set throughout with rose-cut diamonds, abdomen further accented with brown enamel (lack of enamel), with a tiger's eye set thorax and ruby cabochon-set eyes French assay mark (eagle head) for 18K gold. Size/Dimensions approximately: 4.5 x 3 cm Gross weight approximately : 15,44 grams Smaller brooch set with a cushion-shaped sapphire, variously shaped old and rose-cut diamonds, cabochon rubies, silver and yellow gold (one missing stone) Stamped 925 for sterling silver and 750 for 18K gold Size/Dimensions approximately : 2,6 x 2 cm Gross weight approximately : 4,34 grams Both unsigned These pieces of jewelry reflect the great vogue for insect-shaped jewelry that marked the period from 1860 to 1885. They imitate nature as faithfully as possible. The bee was particularly appreciated.
