East Plate - Heinrich Schwed - Munich, circa 1920 East Plate, decorated with verses and the Stars of David, made by Heinrich Schwed. Signed, Munich, circa 1920 In the center of the plate is an engraved Star of David above a circular inscription - ”From the east of the sun to its entrance, praise the name of the Lord”, in Hebrew punctuation marks. At the top of the plate appears the inscription ”East” and at the edges of the plate the inscription ”Jerusalem”, in the four corners of the plate are beautiful illustrations of animals (an eagle and a deer) and the holy places in Jerusalem and the inscriptions: ”The tomb of Rachel our mother Zia”a and ”A”K Zion and the tombs of the kings of the House of David”. Geometric illustrations cover the entire surface of the plate. The plate is signed ”HSM” (Heinrich Schwed, Munich). Size: 27X20 cm Heinrich Schwed (1880-1962), born in Reichmannsdorf, Germany. In 1924, he established a trading house for ”handicrafts” in Munich, along with a workshop for the production of such objects. Schwed continued to create decorated plates, advertising signs, and other objects until 1937, when the business was confiscated by the Nazi authorities and he himself left Germany with his family and found refuge in Argentina.
