Large alms box for a synagogue, Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes – Romania, 19th century – wood and brass A large and impressive wooden box, with embossed brass plates with inscriptions and illustrations. It served as a synagogue in Romania in the 19th century. On the back of the box is a large, round brass plate with an embossed inscription of verses from the book of Isaiah: ”Zion will be redeemed in justice, and her captives in righteousness”, ”And the work of righteousness will be peace”. In the center of the plate is an illustration of the tomb of Rabbi Meir Baal Hans in Tiberias, and the inscription: ”Charity box for Rabbi Meir Baal Hans, ZIA”A Elha Damair Anani, the tomb of Rabbi Meir Baal Hans, ZIA”A Beiak Tiberias”. On the front of the box on the brass plate is an embossed inscription: ”Charity” accompanied by illustrations. On the sides of the box on the brass plate, an embossed illustration of Rachel's tomb and the site of the Temple. Length: 24 cm, width: 24 cm, height: 12 cm, height of the back plate: 32 cm. Good condition, many signs of use, the box is slightly worn at the corners.
