”The Circle of Life” – Russia. 19th century. Wood carving. In the center of the carving are two symmetrical staircases that connect into a single unit, in the center a gate blocked by a low fence. Ten figures stand on the stairs, on each step the age of the person standing on it is indicated, from ten to ninety years old, in leaps of ten years, from left to right. The figures on the left side of the staircase mean liveliness and vitality, from youth to family life, with the figure at the top in the center of the staircase being 50 years old, as well as the figures on the right staircase. The men on these stairs wear round hats, their bodies bending over. In front of the left staircase stands a baby; at the bottom of the right staircase sits an old man in a wheelchair. 57*43 cm. Very good condition.
