Passover bowl made of pewter – Germany, 18th centuryPassover bowl, made by Joseph Zamponi. Koblenz, Germany, 18th century.Cast and engraved pewter. Signed: ”Zamponi Ioseph In Coblenz” (back, three times).In the center of the plate, inside an eight-pointed star, an imaginary drawing of a lamb resting on the altar and the inscription ”Passover sacrifice” were engraved, around various decorations of flowers and geometric patterns. On the margins of the plate were engraved fourteen seder marks, illustrations of ”Matza”, ”Maror” and ”Arm” (arm), and a dedicatory inscription, which reads: ”Belongs to Katz[y]en 25 Liv and his wife [and his wife] M. Hinkah S. [who will live] in the year of T.K.-”We have not known details about the manufacturer of the pewter tool Joseph Zamponi of Koblenz, but in the catalogueZinnmarken aus aller WeltbyDagmar Stará (Battenberg Publishing, Augsburg, 1992; no. 578), A Peter manufacturer namedJoseph Andreas Zamponi II, who lived between 1792 and 1837, is mentioned, and may have been the son of Zamponi (the first). This hypothesis is also consistent with the dedication dated to the year 1740, since, even if a detail of the year was disrupted, it turns out that the bowl was manufactured and engraved in the second half of the 18th century.
