Hand-made cloth sash, Germany, 1771 [1771] A sash (sash for a Torah scroll) made of hand-made lace fabric, Germany, 1771 [1771]. Length 255 cm, width 15 cm. A sash made of cloth (linen?) made of spectacular hand-made lace that creates upper and lower edges of fabric, along the entire sash. At the beginning of the sash, there is hand-embroidered colored letters within a frame, ”Esther Kohanat Mila, year of Tekla.” The sash is a well-known Ashkenazi custom from the 16th century for making a sash for a Torah scroll from the cloth used for the circumcision (usually linen). The letters of the baby's name, family name, and blessing were embroidered or painted on the fabric. When the child turned three years old, the child would bind the Torah scroll in the synagogue with his ”sash.” The uniqueness of this vimpel, besides the amazing artwork, is the woman's name (perhaps the embroiderer's first name), while the other additions are missing. A few stains, very good condition.
