A DECCAN BRONZE NAGA-NANDI SHRINE SCULPTURE, 19TH CENTURY. - A traditional Indian ritual sculpture from the Deccan region. This Shaivite devotional object consists of two separate components: a seated figure of Nandi, the sacred bull and vahana (mount) of Lord Shiva, and a removable backpiece in the form of a flared Naga (cobra). Nandi is depicted in a couchant posture upon a tiered rectangular pedestal, adorned with a bell collar and ornamental saddlecloth. The Naga backpiece slots into the rear of the base, its broad hood providing a protective canopy over the bull. The interior of the cobra hood is decorated with engraved geometric borders and stylized markings. H: Approximately 13cm
