A SOUTHERN INDIAN BRONZE FIGURE OF UMA-MAHESHVARA, 18TH/19TH CENTURY. - A South Indian religious statuette depicting the Hindu deity Shiva in his manifestation as Uma-Maheshvara. The deity is shown seated in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease, upon a circular lotus pedestal known as a padmasana, which rests on a square base. Shivas primary right hand is raised in abhaya mudra, the gesture of reassurance and fearlessness, while his primary left arm encircles his consort, Parvati (Uma), who is seated upon his left thigh. Both figures are adorned with traditional South Indian jewellery, including necklaces, armlets, and heavy waistbands, and wear the characteristic high, conical karanda mukuta headdress. The lower garments are decorated with deep, linear incised patterns representing fine textiles. H: Approximately 10.5cm
