A SAFAVID TINNED COPPER CALLIGRAPHIC BOWL, PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY - A tinned copper bowl attributed to 17th-century Safavid Persia. The vessel is of globular form with a rounded body, a waisted neck, and a slightly flared, flattened rim. It is constructed from hand-hammered copper with elaborate incised and engraved ornamentation. The decoration is arranged in horizontal registers. The rim features a narrow band of scrolling floral vines. Below this, on the shoulder, is a broad band of Thuluth calligraphy set against a ground of dense foliate scrolls. The main body is decorated with five large polylobed medallions, each containing a central depiction of an animal, possibly a hare or a gazelle, amidst scrolling leaves. These medallions alternate with elongated horizontal cartouches containing geometric interlaced patterns, further interspersed with small six-petaled floral motifs.
