A LARGE PERSIAN QAJAR PIERCED AND ENGRAVED BRASS COCKEREL CENSER, 19TH CENTURY. - A large decorative incense burner or censer in the form of a standing cockerel, attributed to the Persian Qajar tradition. The object is crafted from a copper alloy, likely brass, featuring a darkened aged patina. It is constructed in two primary sections joined by a hinge at the mid-section, allowing the upper half to open and reveal a hollow interior basin. The bird stands upon an integral, flared octagonal pedestal base. The main body, wings, and high-curved tail feathers feature extensive ajoure or openwork decoration in the form of foliate scrolls and arabesques. The head and neck are decorated with a rhythmic incised fish-scale pattern. The wings and tail include circular medallions depicting animals and seated figures. The lower body is encircled by an arched frieze containing various seated figures in courtly or musical poses. A continuous band of incised cursive characters, consistent with Naskh or Thuluth script, is located around the central circumference. The head is set with two turquoise-coloured cabochon eyes.
