AN ISLAMIC SILVER OCTAGONAL AND CYLINDRICAL QUR'AN HOLDER BAZUBAND. - An Islamic silver amulet container, also known as a hirz or bazuband. The piece is of three-part construction, comprising a central octagonal lidded box flanked by two cylindrical scroll cases, all joined by robust hinges. The lid of the central box is decorated in high-relief repoussé with a central floral rosette featuring a swirling pinwheel motif, enclosed within multiple geometric borders of zig-zag and dotted patterns. The two side cylinders are adorned with chased and engraved bands of foliate and geometric designs. The reverse of the central box is decorated with a pounced or stippled geometric pattern forming a central quatrefoil surrounded by scrolling flourishes. The item is fitted with several small suspension loops to the sides and base, intended for a chain or cord to allow it to be worn as a pendant or part of a larger pectoral ornament.
