A PERSIAN QAJAR KHATAM-KARI INLAID BOX, 19TH CENTURY. - A Persian Qajar khatam-kari micro-mosaic inlaid storage box of substantial size, dating to the 19th century. The exterior is decorated throughout with a dense, repeating geometric pattern of six-pointed stars and polygons, created using minute faceted rods of wood, bone, and brass. The lid features a central lobed medallion containing Nasta'liq calligraphy reading Nasir al-Din, indicating production during the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar (1848 to 1896). This central medallion is surrounded by border cartouches containing lines of Persian poetic verses in Nasta'liq script. The front and sides of the box are designed with recessed panels featuring larger-scale geometric inlays of bone or mother-of-pearl arranged in star and diamond configurations. The lid and base are bordered with fine bone stringing and bands of green and red-stained wood. Approximately 15.4 x 40 x 27.3cm (hxlxw)
