AN OTTOMAN SILVER FILIGREE CIGARETTE CASE. - An Ottoman silver filigree case of rectangular form with rounded corners, designed for use as a cigarette or calling card holder. The item is constructed from high-grade silver wirework. The exterior panels are decorated with a central ten-pointed star or floral motif enclosed within a beaded oval border. The surrounding areas are filled with scrolling filigree motifs and foliate patterns, all contained within a repeating wirework border. The interior reveals the same filigree construction and includes a side push-button release and a functional hinge. Centrally located on the interior of one side is an applied polygonal plaque. This plaque bears an Ottoman sah assay mark, consisting of a tughra-style script in Arabic calligraphy above two five-pointed stars, which serves as an official mark of silver fineness.
