OTTOMAN SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY OR LATER, 'A PAIR OF ILLUMINATED CALLIGRAPHIC PANELS'. - A pair of illuminated manuscript panels featuring Arabic calligraphy and intricate tezhip illumination on paper. The right-hand panel displays large-scale thuluth calligraphy in black ink on a gold-ground square; the characters transcribed include the word Allah accompanied by the small honourific Jalla Jallaluhu, with a smaller cartouche above containing the word Al-Rahman. The left-hand panel follows a matching composition, with the lower square containing the attribute Al-Hadi and the honourific Jalla Jallaluhu, while the middle cartouche contains Al-Rahim. Both panels are surmounted by arched polychrome headers featuring floral motifs in blue, red, and gold. The outer borders are decorated with dense, scrolling foliate designs in gold pigment on a cream ground. The two panels are mounted together behind a black mat and housed in a dark wood frame with a gilt inner fillet. Approximately 49.7 x 42.2cm
