PERSIAN SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY, 'SHIA DEVOTIONAL CALLIGRAPHIC COMPOSITION'. - This Persian Qajar-period calligraphic painting is executed in ink, watercolour, and gouache on paper, featuring dense religious iconography and Shia devotional inscriptions. The central composition is dominated by a large, mirrored calligraphic rendering of Ya Ali flanking an architectural structure, possibly representing a mihrab or shrine, with a decorative ornament suspended from its centre. This central scene is further flanked by two ceremonial tabar (axes). The artwork is decorated with traditional islimi floral scrollwork and borders containing panels of marbled paper. Persian inscriptions in the outer rectangular panels praise Ali, with the top panel reading در دریای سرمد است علی (Ali is in the eternal sea) and the bottom reading جانشین محمد است علی (Ali is the successor of Muhammad).
