Bidspirit auction | AN OTTOMAN CALLIGRAPHIC GREEN SILK

AN OTTOMAN CALLIGRAPHIC GREEN SILK LAMPAS TEXTILE PANEL. - This textile panel is an example of an Ottoman calligraphic silk lampas, likely a section of a tomb cover or cenotaph hanging. The piece is constructed from olive-green silk using a complex weaving technique where the calligraphic elements and geometric borders are integral to the fabric structure. The design features a repeating chevron or zigzag pattern, a characteristic motif for Ottoman religious textiles. The inscriptions are rendered in a formal thuluth style. The primary bands within the zigzags contain the Shahada: La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but God) and Muhammad Rasul Allah (Muhammad is the messenger of God). The narrower borders of the chevrons feature repeating pious phrases including Ya Hannan, Ya Mannan (O Compassionate, O Benefactor) and Subhan Allah (Glory be to God). Approximately 86 x 80cm
