A QAJAR PIERCED AND ENGRAVED BRASS QUR'AN BOX, PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY. - This rectangular brass casket is of Qajar origin and features a stepped, domed lid and a shaped plinth base with ogival arched feet. The construction employs multiple decorative metalworking techniques, including intricate pierced openwork (ajoure), chased engraving, and repoussé. The sloping sides of the lid and a central horizontal band on the body are decorated with dense calligraphic inscriptions in a stylized thuluth script. The top panel of the lid and the lower register of the body feature intricate foliate and floral scrolls, with the lower sections set within a series of architectural-style niches. The base is finished with a continuous frieze of chased leaf and flower motifs. The casket is fitted with a central brass swing handle on the lid and matching handles on either side. A decorative hinged hasp and clasp are mounted on the front. Approximately 16.5 x 25.5 x 14.2cm (hxlxw)
