A STONE SCULPTURE WITH A DANCING APSARA
India, 12th-13th century
The female figure depicted standing in a dynamic pose, with the left leg raised at the knee and the right one with the foot touching a ball, the right arm bent at the elbow and the hand with another ball, the left one with the fingers bent, the sinuous body with prosperous shapes, the head turned to the left and down, two showy earrings on the lobes.
45 x 83 cm
Provenance: Italian private collection.
The apsaras are female spirits found in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, usually related to clouds and water. The best known iconography is the one exemplified by this sculpture, in which there are evident hints of sensuality.
