CHARLES-GUILLAUME DIEHL (Steinbach, 1811 - Paris) - Height x width x depth: 7,5 x 28 x 10 cm. rectangular in shape, made of inlaid and burl wood, with brass and mother-of-pearl decorations. Signed “Diehl” on the lock. The lid, outlined in purple ebony (Dalbergia cearensis, Ducke, 1925), features a central ebonized reserve, with a brass Greek key frame and an oval mother-of-pearl medallion, engraved with a monogram within a finely chiseled gilded brass frame. Front lock with gilt bronze escutcheon. This lot, accompanied by an expertise issued by Ce.S.Ar Centro studi archeometici. Literature: Charles-Guillaume Diehl (of German origin) was born in Steinbach (Grand Duchy of Hesse) on July 20, 1811. He moved to Paris in 1840, to 3 rue de Thorigny and then to 170 rue Saint-Martin, but did not appear in the Trade Almanac until 1850. At this point, he settled at 16 Rue Michel-le-comte. He then moved to number 21 on the same street (1851-1842) and to number 19, where he remained until his death (1853-1885). His workshops were located at 39 Rue Saint-Sebastien, where he employed six hundred workers in 1870. Diehl is considered one of the most innovative artists of the 19th century, also winning a bronze medal at the 1855 Paris Universal Exhibition.
