Bidspirit auction | A pair of female marble
A pair of female marble profiles, Rome, 18th century - Height x width x depth: 25.5 x 21 x 3.5 cm. depicting female faces in profile, created on marble panels set within carved and gilded wooden frames, embellished with embossed silver appliqués featuring ornamental motifs. The two figures, facing each other, have idealised features in the classical style and are represented in half-length, semi-nude, with elaborate hairstyles that develop into voluminous braids and curls gathered on the head, adorned with ribbons and small floral elements. The visual dialogue between the two profiles, one facing right and the other left, suggests an allegorical couple, perhaps depicting mythological figures or personifications ( for example, Venus and Flora, or Aurora and Night), a theme dear to 18th century Roman sculpture and decoration. Provenance: Count Luigi Rigi Luperti Rizzo collection.
