Louis Pierre Deseine (1749 - 1822) Attributed to - Red chalk on laid paper with watermark (“grape cluster” and countermarked with the letters CM alternated with a heart), approx. 545 × 435 mm (sheet) Louis Pierre Deseine was an accomplished sculptor of the Neoclassical period. In the Restoration period, he produced important busts of contemporary figures, particularly members of the royal family. He also devoted himself extensively to anatomical drawing, a fundamental skill for a sculptor. The École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris preserves an album of sketches entirely dedicated to L’Écorché (The Flayed Man), one of which shows notable affinities with the present drawing.
