Framed A pupil and follower of Rosalba Carriera, Felicita Sartori must be regarded as one of her most accomplished disciples, capable of winning in Venice the admiration of a collector and art enthusiast such as Frederick Christian, Prince of Saxony, son of Elector Augustus III. Thanks to the catalogues of the Dresden Gallery, we are able to form at least a general idea of Sartori’s artistic personality, although it still requires a more thorough reconstruction. She was certainly a skilled miniaturist and a refined portraitist in the tradition of Rosalba, as her very few secure works attest. In this delicate pair of panels, linked thematically by the act of decapitation carried out by the two female protagonists—rendered, however, without brutality and even with a certain detached elegance—we find a well-balanced combination of Bolognese and Venetian influences.
