Mark Rothko, whose birth name was Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz, was a Latvian-born American painter. His painting is classified as abstract expressionist, although he always rejected that label. Like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Rothko is one of the most famous American painters of the post-war period.
