Bidspirit auction | HEAD

HEAD - Anthropomorphic terracotta head, with compact volumes and frontal expression, with well-defined oval eyes and a sharply contoured mouth. The hair is modeled in bands with vertical and horizontal striations, and the neck features three incised rings; a circular opening at the top suggests use as a small vessel. Smoothed surface with dark brown to black patina, polished, with edges highlighted by wear. The articulation of the gaze, the cervical rings, and the symmetrical construction may, in stylistic terms, refer to West African sculptural traditions, a hypothesis that cannot be confirmed by photographs alone.
