Bidspirit auction | AVAR KNOTTED RUG FROM THE

AVAR KNOTTED RUG FROM THE CAUCASUS - This magnificent example of Caucasian textile art, with a marked RRP of €4,300.00, stands out for the archaism of its geometric design and is in an immaculate state of preservation, rigorously without signs of use, presenting fully intact pile, vibrant colors, and perfectly preserved edges. Attributed to the artisanal production of the Avar people, originally from Dagestan (Northeast Caucasus), the rug exhibits large stepped medallions and stylized totemic motifs. The dramatic contrast between the dark grey background and the graphics in shades of coral, terracotta-red, olive-green, and ivory gives the piece an impactful visual presence. Technical analysis of its structure reveals it to be a superb knotted piece with cut wool pile, entirely hand-woven in 100% wool with natural dyes. With impressive dimensions of 4.04 meters in length by 2.44 meters in width, the piece totals a monumental area of 9.85 square meters, an extraordinarily unusual scale for the nomadic productions of this region. Its historical provenance is validated by the original customs lead seal on the selvage and by the label of the prestigious national gallery Marionel, guaranteeing maximum authenticity to this rare and valuable collector's piece.
