1880s Rudge High Wheel, Penny Farthing Bicycle - High wheeler bicycle, circa late 1870s-1880s. Front wheel is about 50” diameter, about 57” high overall. Rear wheel is about 17” diameter. The upper side on the outside end of each hub is stamped ”D. Rudge's Patent” and ”No. 526, 1878,” presumably referring to the hub and ball bearing system. Frame has a shield along the back that is stamped ”C.W. Cutler, Warren, RI.” This badge was a personalized name plate -- the bicycle belonged to Charles William Cutler of Warren (1875-1933), veteran of the Spanish American War, and the son of Cutler Mill owner and whaling ship captain Charles Russell Cutler. Consigned by descendants of the Cutler family. This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice. We maintain a list of reliable shippers, or you may choose your own. Condition: Rolls smoothly. Spoon brake and handle bars appear to have been repainted (silver, and a long time ago). There is a chip out of the back wheel. The large wheel is in good condition. The pedal pads are knobby, as shown in images. The original seat is largely gone. The frame paint appears to be original, with some losses. No significant rust or damage. Very solid-feeling, almost tempting us to try riding it. But not quite.
