Antique YORUBA Divination Bowl, Nigeria - Agere ifa divination bowl of carved wood in the form of a woman with a child and holding a bowl over her head. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria. Approx. 10-1/2” x 5-1/4” x 4-1/2”. Label on bottom identifying the presentation bowl as at one time being property of Stella Pitt-Rivers of the Pitt-Rivers Museum, having been purchased from William Downing Webster in 1897 by Lt. Gen. Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers. Penned on the back if the child is ”Africa, [illegible] Webster, Mar. 1897, F.1448.” Webster (British, 1868-1913) was a well-known collector and dealer in ethnographic art and antiquities. Likely provenance: Acquired from Webster by LTG Pitt Rivers, passed to George Pitt-Rivers, then upon his death in 1966, passed to his mistress/partner Stella Pitt-Rivers, who liquidated a large number of items from the museum.
