U.S. Model 1881 1st Infantry Spike Helmet - United States Army dress ceremonial M81 parade pith helmet with spike. Front with the Great Seal of the United States and an American Eagle, crossed rifles behind a shield, marked with the number 1 for the 1st Infantry Regiment. 1880's, Third Indian War period. During this time period the 1st Infantry campaigned against the Geronimo led Apache. Cork covered with black fabric, brass spike, plates, and buttons. No apparent mark. Approx. 10” x 10-1/2”. Overall good condition with typical wear to leather and fabric, including: missing chin strap, losses to the underside of the brim, and staining to the interior.
