WW2: 1935 Luftwaffe & Blue Max Cabinet - Made for one of the highest-ranking Luftwaffe leaders -- possibly the highest -- this unique and symbolically charged German cabinet features inlaid insignia of the early Luftwaffe and the Pour le Merite (Blue Max), Germany's highest military honorduring World War I. Constructed in 1935 by 26-year-old journeyman carpenter Fritz Becker under the supervision of Kassel-based master carpenter Erich Brenssell, a member of the Reichskammer der bildenden Kunste (Reich Chamber of Fine Arts).The cabinet is fully documented in an original signed letter from Brenssell dated October 1, 1935, noting a price of 700 Reichsmarks -- a substantial sum for the period. Crafted with fine burl veneer and geometric detailing, the cabinet's interior doors display marquetry emblems: the Luftwaffe eagle clutching a swastika on the right, and the Pour le Merite cross on the left. The interior features two drawers and hidden upper and side compartments.Given its early date, elite symbolism, and bespoke craftsmanship, the piece was almost certainly commissioned by or created for a senior Luftwaffe officer who had received the Pour le Merite during World War I.
