French 1855 Infantry Officer's Sword, Solingen - French M1855 saber with 30-3/4” blade, 36-1/2” overall length, 1-1/8” wide at the ricasso. Blade bears Solingen-style inspection stamps: an ”S” and ”B” or ”R” in shield cartouches. Brass guard with laurel and rosette detailing; pommel cap fea raised floral motif. Grip is wrapped in ray skin with intact twisted wire. No scabbard present. This French M1855-style saber, likely Solingen-made for export, closely resembles examples imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War due to shortages of domestic cavalry weapons.
