Bidspirit auction | South Asian Terracotta Devotional Statue

South Asian Terracotta Devotional Statue - Ancient hollow terracotta standing figure with tall headdress, mounted on integral flared pedestal with relief figures. Measures about 16-1/2” high. Traces of black over white wash. Some red shows through. Initially thought to be a Chinese mingqi, but fits less as a funerary figure and more of a religious one. Precise period unknown. Provenance: From the estate of Jean Wilson, who -- along with her friend Elizabeth Otey Watson -- donated a large number of Asian ceramics and bronzes to build the collection of Washington & Lee University's Watson Pavilion.
