Continental School, 19th Century, A Pair of 'Allegorical Figures' - A pair of high relief carvings executed in a dark, stained wood, each depicting a classical or allegorical figure. The first panel portrays a kneeling female figure in draped garments embracing a smaller, youthful figure, possibly representing Charity or a maternal figure. The second panel shows a seated female figure holding a distaff and spindle, a traditional allegorical motif representing Industry or Clotho, one of the three Fates. Both carvings feature stylized, flowing drapery and expressive forms. The panels are inset into matching dark wood frames and secured on the reverse with slotted screws and metal turn-buttons. Small eye-screws are attached to the upper edge of the frames for hanging. No artist signatures, dates, or manufacturer marks are visible on the front or the wooden backing panels.
